Certified Green Business
MidTech Software Solutions, Inc., became the first IT firm to be certified by Santa
Clara County as "Green Business" on October 30, 2008. This is part of MidTech’s
Green Initiative to conserve resources and maximize efficiency through its operations
on all levels. After an extensive analysis of the company’s operations and employee
habits, MidTech has devised methods to optimize the resources it uses and find areas
where greener solutions can be applied.
We commit to greening our entire operation and set an example for other firms to
follow. In an industry where innovation is the foundation, we are seeking a new
way of combining IT and eco-friendly efficiency to establish a new trend in the
tech industry; becoming a Green Business is our first step towards that vision.
Steps MidTech took to achieve greener operation include:
- Apply server virtualization to maximize energy consumption and decommission unnecessary
servers
- Application consolidation to allow more applications to run on the same machine
resulting in even less energy consumption
- Maximizing use of MidTech intranet portal on SharePoint to centralize document repository
and promote a paperless collaboration environment
- Recycling bins at all employee’s cubes and setting up guidelines for what is recyclable
including EPA plastic type identifiers
- Ensuring all equipment owned and purchased are energy star compliant
- Encourage paperless operation and discourage unnecessary printing
- Turning off all lights and electronics if employees are away from their desks
- Using online meetings and other tools to reduce personnel travel
- Adjusting thermostat to use less AC during hotter weather and less heating during
colder weather

Purchasing office supplies that are made from recycled material such as printer
paper and boxes
MidTech will be unveiling our plans for its Green Initiative in the near future
to showcase not only how to further improve its own efficiency but also advise other
firms on how they can introduce greener methods into their operation.
About Santa Clara County Green Business Program
The Green Business Program is a successful partnership of environmental agencies
and utilities that assists, recognizes and promotes businesses and government agencies
that volunteer to operate in a more environmentally responsible way. To be certified
"green," participants must be in compliance with all regulations and meet program
standards for conserving resources, preventing pollution and minimizing waste. The
program offers motivated businesses and agencies an easy-to-use framework for improving
environmental performance. Over 1500 businesses and public agencies have been certified
since 1996 bay area wide and over 330 of those are in Santa Clara County.
