Industry: GPS Technology Provider
Service: Infrastructure and Application Consolidation
Client: Our client develops and markets global positioning system (GPS) based
location technology solutions that provide location-awareness capabilities for mobile
consumer and commercial applications. It offers a range of GPS and standalone chip
sets that comprise integrated circuits, radio frequency, integrated and digital
signal processing circuits, and embedded GPS software.
Challenge: The client had completed its acquisition and merged the two company’s
IT organizations. As a result, there were many redundant IT platforms, servers,
applications and databases. Facing an increasingly challenging economic climate,
its decentralized and heterogeneous IT environment caused business overheads and
scalability issues. For internal operation, there were two intranet portals running
on 11 servers. With two different company domain names, the portal was unable to
communicate. There were multiple sets of application architectures and database
to be maintain and support. New requirements were difficult to implement for growing
need of business.
Solution: MidTech centralized the company intranet frameworks and consolidated
portals and databases. Our SharePoint team first migrated the portals to MOSS platform
allowing scalability and centralization of intranet. MidTech infrastructure team
consolidated the applications and databases, then moved the portals to run on domain
with migration of user accounts and permissions. All databases were consolidated
to single SQL 2005 server when web applications were migrated to single MOSS web
front end. We also prepared server redundancy for cold stand by DRP platform.
Result: The centralized and consolidated portal helps reducing from 11 servers
to 4 servers. While saving big in energy and labor costs for maintaining the 7 additional
server, the client is able to standardize the business process and quickly respond
the growth of its business.
